National Walk Day: Why Walking Together Matters for Boise

National Walk Day is one of my favorite reminders that health doesn’t have to be complicated. Movement doesn’t need a gym membership, expensive equipment, or a perfect routine. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for our bodies and minds is simply… walk.
First week of April is National Walk Day. I had the chance to join Idaho Today to talk about National Walk Day and share something close to my heart: Walk with a Doc Boise
How Walk with a Doc Started — and How It Reached Boise
Walk with a Doc began in 2005 when a cardiologist in Ohio wanted to create a simple, welcoming way for patients to move more and ask questions outside the pressure of a clinic visit. The idea was beautifully straightforward: go for a walk, bring a doctor, invite the community.
I brought Walk with a Doc to Boise because I wanted that same spirit here — a space where people could learn, connect, and move without judgment or barriers. As a primary care physician, I see every day how stress, isolation, and chronic conditions affect our community. Walking is one of the most accessible tools we have to counter all of that.

Why This Program Matters to Me
Walk with a Doc Boise isn’t just a program I run — it’s something that reflects my values as a physician and as a member of this community.
1. Movement as medicine
Walking improves mood, sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar, joint health, and longevity. It’s one of the most evidence‑based interventions we have, and it’s free.
2. Community as healing
So many people feel disconnected from the healthcare system. Walking side‑by‑side — not across a desk — changes the dynamic. It builds trust, lowers anxiety, and opens space for real conversation.
3. Accessibility and inclusion
As a Afro-Latina physician and someone committed to culturally sensitive care, I want health spaces where everyone feels welcome — families, elders, immigrants, LGBTQ+ community members, people who are new to exercise, and those managing chronic conditions. Walking is universal. It meets people where they are.
4. Joy
Honestly, it’s fun. I get to see people laugh, meet neighbors, bring their kids, walk their dogs, and celebrate small wins. It’s one of the most joyful parts of my month.
What We Do at Walk with a Doc Boise
Each walk includes:
A short, accessible health topic
A group walk at a comfortable pace
Time for questions, conversation, and connection
A welcoming, judgment‑free environment
You don’t need to be a patient. You don’t need to be “in shape.” You just need comfortable shoes and curiosity.
Why National Walk Day Matters
National Walk Day is a reminder that health is not about perfection — it’s about consistency, community, and compassion. When we walk together, we build healthier individuals and a healthier Boise.
