Celebrating Our Roots, Rising Together: A Reflection on ICHA’s Rebrand Launch

Start of the conversation: Rebranding of the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs

On the final day of Hispanic Heritage Month, I had the honor of attending the rebranding launch of the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs (ICHA)—a vibrant celebration of our culture, resilience, and future. Governor Brad Little officially declared September 15 to October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Idaho, saying it was “just in the nick of time.” That moment felt like a warm embrace of our community’s contributions.

It takes a village

Attorney General Raúl Labrador shared a deeply personal story of growing up in Las Vegas with his Puerto Rican mother, both attending college together. His journey—navigating language barriers, ADHD, and single-parenthood—was a powerful reminder that our challenges shape us, not define us. His vulnerability resonated with many of us who’ve faced similar paths. In our community, we uplift each other—whether through titis, tíos, or chosen family bound by corazón.

As ICHA’s executive director, Annette Valenzuela Tipton, described the new logo is rich with symbolism: the Taino sun, the Amazon and Snake Rivers, the Andes and Sawtooth Mountains—all echoing our shared strength, movement, and ancestral wisdom. The motto “Strong Root. Shared Values. Our Community.” speaks to the heart of Libélula’s mission rooted in love and purpose.

What is next for ICHA?

ICHA’s priorities—civic engagement, economic development, education, and healthcare—hold great promise. Now, we must ask: What are the SMART goals? Who is accountable? How will success be measured? As a physician, I see the potential to improve access, representation, and outcomes for our gente. Let’s make sure these goals are more than words. Let’s build bridges, not walls.

We’re not just part of Idaho—we are Idaho. And together, we’ll keep showing up, speaking out, and thriving.

¡Pa’lante siempre!
