Unidos Venceremos: Reflections from the Latinos Unidos Conference

This past weekend, I had the honor of attending the Latinos Unidos Conference: Unidos Venceremos, organized by PODER of Idaho. It was more than a gathering—it was a powerful reminder of what it means to show up for one another, to learn in community, and to build toward justice with intention and heart.

From the moment I walked in, I felt the energy of shared purpose. The room was filled with Latinx leaders, organizers, students, elders, and allies—each bringing their own story, their own strength. We weren’t just attendees; we were contributors to a collective vision rooted in equity, dignity, and cultural pride and justice. Keynote speaker Joaquín Lara Midkiff shared the powerful story of Santiago, whose inspiring journey began at just 18 years old—the same age as my daughter. Confronted with injustice at such a young age, Santiago transformed his pain into purpose, channeling his determination to organize and advocate for better conditions.

Workshops That Nourished and Mobilized

The sessions ranged from self-care for organizers to diverse skills for local advocacy. I joined a workshop on community storytelling that reminded me how our lived experiences are not just valid—they’re vital. Another session on grassroots organizing offered practical tools for mobilizing around education and healthcare equity.

As a physician and founder of Libélula Primary Care, I was especially moved by the conversations around mental health, access to care, and the importance of culturally responsive services. These are the very pillars Libélula is built on, and it was affirming to see them echoed throughout the conference.

Connection, Culture, and Shared Power

Beyond the workshops, the most meaningful moments came in the form of quiet conversations—over cafecito, in hallway hugs, during shared meals. I met fellow Latinx professionals, youth leaders, and community elders who reminded me that our strength lies in our intergenerational wisdom and our unwavering commitment to one another.

We laughed, cried, strategized, and celebrated. We spoke Spanglish and danced to rhythms that felt like home. We honored our ancestors and envisioned futures where our communities thrive—not just survive.

Why This Matters

In a time when our communities continue to face systemic barriers, spaces like this are not optional—they’re essential. They remind us that we are not alone. That our voices matter. That organizing is healing. That joy is resistance.

As Libélula continues to grow, I carry these lessons with me. I’m more committed than ever to building a practice that reflects the values we uplifted at the conference: inclusion, access, cultural humility, and shared power.

Gracias to PODER of Idaho for creating this space. And to every person who showed up with courage, curiosity, and corazón—thank you. Unidos, venceremos.
