Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

September marks a time of vibrant celebration, remembrance, and pride across Latin America and the United States. As Hispanic Heritage Month begins, we honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities—many of whom trace their roots to nations that declared independence in this very month.

From Mexico (Sept 16) to Chile (Sept 18), Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (all Sept 15), September is a tapestry of liberation stories. But not all are free. Puerto Rico had an unsuccessful attempt September 23 and continues to live under colonialism. These milestones remind us that freedom is not just a political act—it’s a cultural inheritance, a spiritual resilience, and a collective promise to future generations.

Voices That Echo Across Time

Each quote below carries the heartbeat of our heritage:

  • “The unity of our peoples is not a mere chimera of men, but an inexorable decree of destiny.” — Simón Bolívar Bolívar’s vision of pan-Latinx unity resonates deeply today. Whether through community walks, employer partnerships, or inclusive outreach, we believe that healing is strongest when it’s shared.

  • “Sí se puede.” — Dolores Huerta More than a slogan, Huerta’s rallying cry is a call to action. It reminds us that change is possible—especially when we uplift marginalized voices and advocate for health equity.

  • “I am the granddaughter of slaves, who dared to dream. I am the daughter of immigrants, who challenged the status quo. I am a symbol of hope and resilience.” — Sonia Sotomayor Justice Sotomayor’s journey is a testament to the power of heritage and perseverance. Her words inspire us to see every patient not just as a diagnosis, but as a story of strength.

  • “Life is a carnaval.” — Celia Cruz Cruz’s iconic lyric is a joyful reminder that even amid struggle, there is celebration. At Libélula, we embrace this spirit—through music, movement, and moments of joy that nourish the soul.

Why September 15 to October 15 Matters

The independence of Latin American countries in September is more than historical—it’s symbolic. It represents the courage to break free, the right to self-determination, and the enduring fight for dignity. For many in our community, these dates are personal. They are reminders of grandparents who marched, parents who migrated, and children who now thrive in spaces that honor their roots.
