"Honest to ever-loving God.
I hate to do this because I like to keep this stuff light.
But I'm wide awake at 11 at night couldn't help but get fired up about what happened today.
Yes, I have a son with Autism.
Yes, I am active in the autism community.
Yes, I am very passionate about this topic.
But man - I can NOT abide with the complete lack of information, factual and otherwise.
I can NOT abide with the dangerous labeling being done, and I hope, I really do...that this post helps.
Note: I am not a doctor, I am not a lawyer, I am not an expert. I just listen and read as much as I can from the people that are.
Because these things effect my family, and people I love. Full stop.
First a timeline.
1911 – Eugen Bleuler coins the term "autism" to describe a symptom of schizophrenia (extreme social withdrawal).
1925 – Grunya Sukhareva publishes the first clinical descriptions of children with traits we now recognize as autistic.
1953 - Acetaminophen is introduced into the pharmaceutical world.
1955 - Tylenol is approved by the FDA and makes it way onto shelves.
70 years later, and 114 years after the first real published signs of Autism, we throw stones at an over-the-counter pill.
So, I took down some notes and I am gonna take things point by point from that speech today, like I'm back in frickin' debate in high school.
1) And I really hope you all know this. Tylenol is not the only product that contains Acetaminophen. So, why is this the only product being called out by name? Nyquil. Alka-Seltzer. Sudafed. Among others, all contain this drug that supposedly should be avoided. But only Tylenol is mentioned. Weird.
A complete list: https://www.bemedwise.org/.../acetaminophen-containing/
2) As far back as 2014 lots of places have been studying the possible link between Acetaminophen and Autism. Wanna guess what they found? Not a dang thing. Over a decade. Nothing. Source: https://drexel.edu/.../No-link-between-acetaminophen-use...
3) A funny thing happened in the last few months. Studies, done by Harvard and a few other universities DID find a small link. You may remember Harvard as the school our President said was terrible a few weeks ago. Anyway, those studies for sure found at least something that could link the two.
But here's the problem. And stay with me here. In these studies, they had no control group and used no other factors to determine the results. No genetic factors, environmental factors at all. So basically, they went up to mothers who have children with Autism and asked. "During Pregnancy, did you take Tylenol for a fever or a headache?" And, if they said "Yes" They went in the Tylenol causes Autism box. You see the problem there? If I asked the same women - "Did you eat McDonald's while you were pregnant with your Autistic child?" You know how many "yes" answers I would get? A bunch. And if I used those results to say: McDonald's causes Autism. That would be pretty shady science, right? Right. So, yeah. There's nothing credible at all that shows this link, in fact - it's the opposite.
Some other things that were said that just aren't true:
4) There 100% IS Autism in the Amish community. There has been for a long while. Spoiler: Cases are rising.
5) There is Autism in Cuba. Why were the cases so low for so long? Communism kinda makes it hard to set medical standards for diagnosing anything. Let alone Autism. But now that they know what to look for, wanna guess what's happening? Yeah. The number of diagnoses are rising. Source: https://autismspectrumnews.org/autism-in-cuba/
6) Yes. There is Autism in Japan. Those cases are increasing as well.
7) Vaccines. We've been over this, guys. Countless studies prove vaccines do NOT cause Autism.
"But, the lady who hosted Singled Out says they do." I don't know what you want me to do with that, honestly. Even if you find a doctor or two that says that's the case. Those opinions can 100% of the time be traced back to Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the father of the Anti-Vax movement.
Here's the problem. On those studies people quote, HE LIED. He falsified information. He lost his medical license. And all his so called research was discredited. Because he made it up. It's all BS. And because sad, tired and scared parents want something to blame, they NEED a magic bullet, they believe it. I get it. I do. But, it's just not true. It's all in black and white.
8 ) When your child is vaccinated, it is not all done at once with 80 things, like a horse. Whatever that means. There is a schedule that is spread out over years. Kind of like the President suggested it should be. You'd think he would know that.
9) Hepatitis B is not a JUST sexually transmitted disease. It is bloodborne and can be passed from Mother to Child. If done so, it can cause your baby's liver to completely shut down. This is why that vaccine exists and is effective.
10) The administration is also pushing the use of Luecovorin as a possible drug that could help those with Autism. It may. There's some cases with interesting results and some with zero. As with anything, there's also some bad side effects - like nerve damage. It basically is Folic Acid, a Vitamin B supplement. Is a Vitamin supplement the key to Autism? Forgive me if I am skeptical, but hey. You never know.

11) So, why the dramatic increase in cases? How did this turn into an epidemic that is taking over the United States and nowhere else?
Well, that second part has already been disproven. We aren't the only ones. Why more cases? It's right in the name. The Autism Spectrum. There's a sliding scale of how much or little Autism can affect the person that is diagnosed with it. There're high functioning people that live mostly normal lives - they are still someone living with Autism.
We are learning more and diagnosing more. There are people in their 40s and 50s that are just getting diagnosed because now we know what to look for. And, if you want to get serious for a minute. All the way up to 1982 this country did horrible, terrible and unspeakable things to children and adults with this diagnosis in institutions around the country.
We abandoned, locked away and forgot these people for decades and pretended the most severe cases never existed. We aren't being invaded on all sides by some stranger. We finally are recognizing a group of forgotten and abused kids that need our help, our patience and our love.
You know what though? A lot of info was thrown out today. And, if anything said by those people at the podium gave you pause...or made you second-guess anything. That's ok! Do me a favor though, ask questions about it with a medical professional you trust. You might be surprised at the different information you receive from people that can actually pronounce the word "Acetaminophen".
I'm not surprised at what happened today (09.22.2025). I'm disappointed. Not just at the misinformation. But the finger-pointing really.
What we need is to make sure these kids have the resources they need to thrive. The professionals that can help them through the tough times, and the training for law enforcement to understand how to deal with people that see the world different than the rest of us. No matter what. Forgive me if I think that Vitamin B falls a little short in those departments.
One last thing: Parents - I know how hard this path has been for you. It's called a Spectrum for a reason. Some of you have had a much more difficult road than others. I know you have lost sleep, riddled with guilt. Questioning if there was something that you did? Some decision you made that somehow made your kid's life more difficult than it had to be.
Rest easy. I don't give a rat's ass what you heard today. That pill you took when you had a headache DID NOT give your baby Autism. That dose that helped you sleep when you were battling the flu didn't do this to your family. This is NOT YOUR FAULT. Don't you dare think that it was.
Walk tall and proud, fight like hell for your kid and family and make sure they get the best care they can, any way they can - and love them the best you can.
If you made it this far, congrats. This rant was my own and doesn't represent anything but me…that's it."
Nic encapsulated my outrage in a very articulate and well researched way. I will add the cases used for the early 1900s dated back to the 1700s. The observation and later description and refined definition dates to hundreds of years. Bravo Nic for standing up for our children and science.
