How Climate Change Is Shaping Life and Health in the Treasure Valley Community

On September 2nd, 2026, I attended the Treasure Valley Climate Change Symposium, a gathering of scientists, educators, health leaders, and neighbors who care deeply about the future of our valley. Climate change was at the center of every conversation—not as an abstract idea, but as something already affecting our daily lives, our health, and the systems we rely on in our community. From hotter summers to shifting water supplies, we’re seeing changes that matter for every family in our community.

What Hotter Days Mean for Your Health

Experts shared how extreme heat events, like the historic “heat dome” in Seattle, can overwhelm a region quickly. When temperatures stay high overnight and cooling options are limited, people face higher risks of dehydration, kidney stress, heart problems, and medication‑related heat sensitivity. Here in the Treasure Valley, we’re already experiencing longer stretches of dry heat, and we’re paying close attention to how this affects your well‑being.

Water: A Precious and Changing Resource

Water was another major theme. Our valley depends on snowpack, aquifers, and irrigation systems that are under increasing pressure. As our population grows and industries expand, water demand is rising faster than our infrastructure can adapt. Large companies like Micron are investing in water‑recycling systems, which is encouraging, but these solutions are still expensive and not yet scaled for community‑wide resilience.

Why This Matters for You

Coming from Puerto Rico, I’ve seen firsthand how fragile infrastructure can become during extreme weather. Power outages, water shortages, and heat emergencies can quickly turn into health emergencies. Treasure Valley is not facing those challenges yet—but the signs are here, and the best time to prepare is before a crisis arrives.

At Libélula, we’re focusing on:

  • helping patients understand heat‑related risks

  • supporting families who work outdoors

  • reviewing medications that affect temperature regulation

  • offering guidance for safe hydration

  • being a trusted place for community information

Your health is connected to the health of our environment, and we take that seriously.

Community Strength Is Our Best Tool

One of the most inspiring parts of the symposium was seeing how many people care deeply about this valley—teachers, farmers, scientists, students, and neighbors from all backgrounds. Resilience doesn’t come from one big solution. It comes from many small, steady actions: checking on each other during heat waves, learning how climate affects our health, supporting local water‑protection efforts, and advocating for infrastructure that keeps everyone safe.

Celebrating Community Through Idaho Latino Conservation Week

As part of this commitment to community resilience, we’re excited to join Idaho Latino Conservation Week on September 19 in collaboration with Idaho Hispanic Foundation, AARP Idaho, and Ada County Medical Society. This physician‑led walking group offers a fun and safe space to get outside, learn about health, and connect with new friends. It’s a reminder that caring for our environment and caring for each other go hand in hand. El evento es GRATIS y todos son bienvenidos, and we hope to see you there as we continue building a healthier, more connected Treasure Valley.

Moving Forward Together

Treasure Valley is growing, changing, and facing new challenges. But we are also a community full of creativity, compassion, and determination.
