Roberto Clemente: Health of Body and Soul

"Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth." — Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente wasn’t just a baseball legend—he was a healer in his own right. His swing was powerful, yes, but his heart was even stronger. Born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Clemente rose from humble beginnings to become the first Latin American inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. But his true legacy lives in the lives he touched off the field: delivering aid to earthquake victims, speaking out against injustice, and showing up for the people who were often overlooked.

A Legacy at Risk

This season, Clemente’s legacy faced an unexpected challenge. In early April, the Pittsburgh Pirates quietly replaced the iconic No. 21 panel on the right-field wall at PNC Park with an advertisement for an alcoholic beverage. The change sparked immediate backlash—from fans, community leaders, and Clemente’s own family. Roberto Clemente Jr. voiced his dismay publicly, calling out the lack of communication and respect for a tribute that meant so much to Puerto Ricans and baseball fans alike.

The national outcry was swift and heartfelt. And thanks to that collective voice, the Pirates reversed course, reinstating the No. 21 logo just days later. I had the honor of seeing the restored panel in person—a moment that reminded me how deeply Clemente’s spirit still moves us. His legacy isn’t just etched in stadium walls—it lives in every act of service, every stand for dignity, and every voice that refuses to let history be erased.

Honoring Clemente and not wasting our time on Earth

As a Puerto Rican, I carry his words like a compass. Clemente believed that service was sacred—that making a difference was not optional, but essential. That belief pulses through Libélula Primary Care. Every bilingual outreach, every inclusive wellness walk, every moment spent listening to a patient’s story is a tribute to Clemente’s vision: that health is not just physical, but spiritual and communal.

He taught us that dignity matters. That showing up for others is the highest form of medicine. And that when we choose compassion over convenience, we honor our time on Earth.

Clemente’s number 21 isn’t just stitched into jerseys—it’s stitched into our values. At Libélula, we don’t just treat symptoms. We build trust. We uplift voices. We make space for healing that includes culture, language, and love.

Because like Clemente, we believe that every opportunity to make a difference is sacred. And we refuse to waste it.
